Background

Native to the high-altitude cloud forests and mountain ravines of northwestern Mexico.

A relatively late addition to European horticulture compared to Asian species, gaining broader traction in UK and European specialist collection nurseries in the late 20th century. Historically cultivated exclusively as the wild species rather than distinct named cultivars

Cultivation

• Position & Soil: Prefers sheltered, frost-free or mild microclimates in partial shade to deep shade. Requires protection from drying winter winds. Thrives in humus-rich, well-drained, neutral-to-acidic soils that stay reliably moist. Self-clings using aerial rootlets

• Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Trim unwanted or stray branches right after flowering ends in late summer to control shape.

• Colour Note: Flower color is unaffected by soil pH; domed flower heads emerge greenish-white and mature to creamy white.

• Propagation: Propagates via semi-ripe stem cuttings taken in late summer placed under bottom heat. Lower branches trailing near ground level can also be layered into surrounding moist soil.​​​​
